Civilization® V App Reviews

I didn’t read

Only buy this game if you want to be an anti social POS. Or buy it on Steam and actually be able to play with friends. I didn’t read the description which is my fault, but to not have online support for a Civ game is beyond stupid. Buy Civ 5, just not on the App Store.

...

bug with workers means you manually force them to improve tiles every turn until completion. otherwise great.

4K Resolution Support is Disappointing

I’m really disappointed that they hype how great its 4K support is on this product. Does it fill the entire screen, yes. Did they include any higher resolution images, no. It just looks like they resized up the same images to be larger. The app feels dated as it was released back in 2010 and no major changes have been done on it. The gameplay is the classic civilization game (1-4) and its enjoyable. I just wish it was cheaper.

Civ 5

I have always loved playing Civilization since it first came out. Some Civ versions were better than others, I do have to say that IMO Civ 5 is probably the best game I have played. The advancements that have been added only make this game even better and even more complex when having to deal with different countries and ideologies. This game also helps to give you an idea as to just how complicated it truly can be to rise up from the primitive beginings of basic survival, to the advancement of science and technologies that get us to space travel without destroying each other and the planet first. It is a brilliant game, and I do have to take my hat off to Mr Sid Meier for taking on such an almost impossible task of re creating all the Civilizations that survived to this day and the other great Civilizations that eventually fell for one reason or another. The possibilities are endless to the eventual outcome of every game. That being submitted to this review, I do have to get to my criticisms of Civ 5 unfortunately. The major problem I have with this game since the first version came out, is that it crashes on me or freezes on me and usually at the most critical times. I never can seem to finish Civ 5 because it crashes almost every time or about 5 minutes after I have loaded my saved game. These crashes usually happen depending on how advanced you and the other players get later in the game. For example I have been playing for almost three weeks now with two allied countries, and the computer also with two allied countries. I have aquired all the sciences from the science tree and have nuclear capability so does the computer and its allies. I was on turn 888 after fighting a never ending bitter war with , Germany , Rome, and Japan. My allies England and Russia had been able to fight them for years holding them back why I resupplied them with newer weapons and better technologies. The planet was raveged by nuclear weapons until they were finally banned and just as I thought i might get the upper hand, the whole system took a dump and crashed. Now the game crashes all the time before I get to even make one turn. Again Im pretty late into the game but this always seems to happen in every version of Civ I have had. It has always been a buggy game, but now Im thinking that maybe its getting too complex for the computer to even handle. Plus Im dying to see the end for once and its becoming a very aggravating game!

i used to like this game

until i could only get in about 1-2 minute play time then it would freeze up on me and i would have to restart my mac!!! FIX PLEASE I GOT SO FAR INTO MY GAME I DONT WANT TO HAVE TO START OVER!!!!!!

Memory hog

Had a 2012 MacBook Pro that I purchased this fun game on. Gameplay itself is immersive, graphics beautiful but I think the amount of RAM this game takes up killed my computer. I upgraded to a brand new MacBook Pro Retina SSD (2015) which runs clean, efficient & quiet. Civ V immediately caused the fan to spool up & run like crazy, killed what remaining battery I had left. Don’t recommond playing with other apps open & not unplugged. Don’t know if there’s a way to fix this problem...

no map building

the best part of civs has always been able to recreate certain wars, 4 example that battle 4 baghdad, i could use the map builder to recreate baghdad, put us troops nato troops iraq troops, alqua… an the kurds in an battle out a recent fight in history, all that is gone now an it makes playing the same scenarios over an over quite boring, so way to go u ruined my fav game of all time, im about to reinstall civs 4

Great Game but it needs Multiplayer over the Internet

Great Game! No bugs that cause major problems, and with 4K it looks great! However, I wish that it had multiplayer so I could play with my friends.

Great game, only downside is because of apple

I would agree with those who say this is a phenomenal game. I have spent an insane amount of hours playing this game, and have absolutely nothing bad to say about the gameplay. The only thing I cannot fathom is how apple can justify the price of the expansions. They are selling the game at a discounted price, yet the expansion is still $29.99. This must be something that has simply been forgotten about. There is no explanation for selling an expansion to a game for more than the game itself. I would love to buy the expansion to expand a game that I already love, but am not willing to spend 30 bucks for it.

great strategy game

Really engrossing and challenging. The Gods and Kings expansion improves the AI and makes it even better.

BUGS!!!

I am a first time CIV player and CIV 5 is the game I chose to get to play for the first time. The game mechanics are fantastic and the overall idea of the game is very very cool. Definitely a great game and you will find yourself playing for a lot more hours than you originally anticipated. However, I am experiencing the same bugs involving workers that I see everyone all over the internet complaining about. When you first begin the game there are no bugs and everything works just fine. After a few hours in though, my workers start needing comands every single turn before I can advance to the next turn. It will go something like this. 1. I give my worker an order to build a farm for instance (which takes say 4 turns) 2. Then hit next turn and it goes to the next turn. 3. I move warriors and some other units that I have. 4. It prompts me “Next Turn” in the blue button at the bottom right but as soon as I hit the button it switches to “A Unit Needs Orders”. 5. So I click on that and it takes me back to the worker that I had told to build a farm who is now no longer building the farm. 6. So I tell it to build the farm again and that process repeats itself for 4 turns or until the farm is complete… I shouldn’t have to tell my worker each turn to build the farm it should just do it until its done and then prompt me afterwards like it does properly at the beginning of the game. On a more positive note, the multiplayer in this game really is awesome. I bought this from the MAC APP store and my friend bought it through steam on his PC and we were still able to play co-op multiplayer and work as a team with two different civilizations against 3 other AI teams of two. Very cool feature. This game would EASILY be rated 5 stars if it weren’t for these bugs… The saddest part about the whole thing is that I was reading forums and reviews of people complaining about this specific bug as far back as 2013… It is now 2016 and it is still not fixed… Seriously!?! I originally had this review at 3 stars but I’m changing it right now to 2 stars because of that. That is a little out of hand. They need to get this fixed ASAP!!!

not working

i had to uninstall this and when i went to reinstall it was going to charge me another 30$ this is crap!

A Deal Here?

There is a deal to be had here. I’ve played buggier versions of Civilization games on different platforms, and Aspyr support helped sort out whatever problems i had with this one. However, in terms of the cost, i’d say you’re better off going to find the game on the Steam marketplace. The complete Civ V experience involves the two 30$ expansion packs, Brave New World and Gods & Kings, neither of which are included here. So, essentially, to get the full experience, you would have to pay the initial 30$ for the Campaign edition, then another 60$ for the two major expansions. Steam bundles them occasionally for substantially less. If you do feel like paying 90$ here, then i’d say go ahead and enjoy yourself. After two years i still find myself enthralled by this game. It’s a deep and meaningful experience that you don’t get in a lot of strategy games, or games in general, nowadays. Make sure your mac can run this game on the highest setting though. This is not a deal breaking condition, but it does look much nicer on the highest resolution. All in all, there is a deal to be had here, especially if you’re only interested in the basic CIv V experience. But it’s up to you whether paying an extra 60$ for the full version is worth it.

Classic game broken by bugs

Game-breaking bugs. Most frustrating is that the workers just stop working so you can’t complete tile improvements automatically. Also, i can’t access the DLC expansion packs to add religion etc. Disappointing.

Needs work. Overall, good.

Every now and then, I have to select a task for a worker, again and again until the task is done. Also, my hall of fame seems to be empty, although I have plenty of replays of me winning...

Will not load

Since the last update it will not load. I have unistalled and reinstalled twice.

Crashes, Don’t waste your time on the appstore, buy from steam.

I didn’t have a problem at all with civ5 until this update, I would have took people’s advice, and not updated to this version, but there was that app store crash that forced me and millions of other people to reinstall their apps to get them to work again. Fixed minor bugs, my arse! I can’t believe I’m giving civ a bad review. Nice game, don’t waste your time redownloading from the appstore after every mistake made by apple. Buy this on steam, it’s easier, and because they have a sale on this every couple of months, it’ll most likely be cheaper too. Everyone told me to buy steam, and I didn’t listen. What the hell was I thinking?!

Freezing on Intel HD 3000 equipped Macs

Cons: I would have preferred to rated this higher, but I am unable to play with my son at all. He is using a Mac mini with Intel HD Graphics 3000 and has constent freezing with the game, only option is to Hard Shutdown Mac, force quit does not work. Tried the Terrian Tessellation setting with no resolve. Known issue with developer. Pros: on my iMac with HD 5000 chipset the game works fine and I have only had App freeze once or twice out of many hours of play. Great game, lots of details to dive into. I only wish me and my son could play together
